October 23, 2008 Yeah, the Mozilla guys may be feeling a little down since Google released its own Chrome web browser. After all, Google was one of Mozilla s biggest supporters. Oh well, you live and you move on, and that s exactly what that crew is doing. You may have heard about the development of Firefox Mobile web browser for cell phones, smartphones, and other mobile devices. Well, it seems that the first device to get Firefox Mobile is the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet.

This is according to PC Advisor, who says that the alpha version of the mobile browser will be designed initially for Windows Mobile devices over the next few months as well. The Nokia N810, although not based in Windows Mobile, has a pretty big developer community, so they ll gladly provide feedback to the Mozilla team. Just don t expect the beta to come out until next year.

NOKIA announced its latest tie-up with Universal Music Group to offer consumers in Philippines up to 100 songs from UMG artists, such as Mariah Carey, Maroon 5, Amy Winehouse, Duffy, U2, Nelly Furtado, OneRepublic, Rihanna and many more, when they buy a new Nokia 5320 XpressMusic or a new Nokia 5220 XpressMusic. Both music phones are now available in authorized Nokia stores and retail outlets.

The Nokia 5320 XpressMusic retails at approximately P12,960 and the Nokia 5220 XpressMusic retails at approximately P9,450. Consumers who purchase the new XpressMusic phones will receive a voucher and an activation code which allows them to start redeeming their favorite music content at www.nokia-asia.com/musicredemption.

They simply select from Universal Music‘s extensive catalog of international and local artists, download the song of their choice and enjoy great music on the go with their new XpressMusic phones. Consumers can also side-load the songs as the XpressMusic phones support Windows Media DRM. “We are thrilled about this latest collaboration with Universal Music which gives music fans out there the opportunity to download up to one hundred of their favourite songs onto their new XpressMusic phones.

The new Nokia 5320 XpressMusic and Nokia 5220 XpressMusic are both excellent music players. This promotion will surely add excitement to the whole entertainment experience for consumers who love music and want to enjoy music wherever they are,” said William Hamilton-Whyte, general manager, Nokia Philippines. “We believe initiatives like this will accelerate the acceptance of music on mobile and provides broad reach to the music and artists from UMG.

During his keynote speech at the Smartphone Show Wednesday (Oct. 22), Kai Oistamo, Nokia ’s executive vice president, changed a title of his speech from “The Future of Smartphones” to “The Future of Computing.” “It’s time to recognise that today’s smart phones are full-fledged computers ,” said Oistamo.

“We should call them what they really are.” Given the increasing processing power, bigger memory and higher display capabilities, together with always-on broadband access to the Internet, “A smart phone, serving as an Internet node, is a ‘computer’ that’s much more personal than today’s mobile computer,” explained Oistamo, who is responsible for Nokia’s device portfolio, R&D, design and related strategy. The notion of Oistamo defining Nokia’s business as something beyond phones is intriguing.

But hang on. Is he saying that Nokia is now aligned with Intel Corp., calling their phones ” mobile Internet devices ,” or MID? Not so fast. When asked during an interview with EE Times , Oistamo said, “Today, they are two different things, based on two different design paradigms.” While MIDs are still more or less a miniature version of a laptop, “Smart phones are much more power-optimised and mobile-optimised,” he explained.

Shades of grey But in five years, the market will see many “shades of grey” in mobile computing devices, predicted the Nokia executive. Smart phones and mobile computers are “converging and colliding,” he observed. It’s clear that Nokia hopes to see itself not just another cell phone company but as a much more broadly defined mobile computing company.

Eastman Kodak and top mobile handset maker Nokia have entered into a patent cross-licensing agreement that will allow each company access to the other’s intellectual property portfolio. The license agreement, provides for Kodak to receive royalties from Nokia, Kodak said ina statement, without disclosing specific financial terms of the deal.

While Nokia already has an arrangement with camera lens maker Carl Zeiss, Kodak has a 10-year global product and cross licensing agreement with Nokia’s US rival, Motorola, which uses a 5-megapixel Kodak lens in Motozine ZN5, and also features ‘Kodak imaging’ and ‘Kodak perfect touch’ technologies to enhance photos with brighter colours and sharper details.

Kodak has adapted its imaging technology for mobile devices, which it says was developed in association with handset manufacturers and service providers to deliver an outstanding mobile imaging experience. Nokia smartphones incorporate some of Kodak’s technologies and the Finland-base handset maker could be aiming to equip its handsets with better photgraphic quality, perhaps on par the picture quality of Kodak products.

”We are pleased to have reached a mutually beneficial arrangement that advances the interests of Kodak and Nokia and validates the strength of Kodak’s intellectual property portfolio,” said Laura G. Quatela, Chief Intellectual Property Officer, and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. ”We look forward to continued collaboration with Nokia.” Wags are having a field day speculating whether Nokia handsets will become more cameras or whether Kodak cameras will become mobile handsets.
