Nokia Extends Lead in Mobile Phone Race

The results from a survey that was conducted by Gartner Inc, a research company showed that Nokia’s fourth-quarter market share increased by unit sales from 36.2 percent to 40.4 percent last year. Samsung Electronics’ share increased to 13.4 percent from 11.3 percent, and the market share for Motorola dropped to 11.9 percent from 21.5 percent.

Web User Mobile phones of the future won’t necessarily have to be rigid, Finnish handset manufacturer Nokia has claimed. The company has been displaying its ‘Morph’ concept at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York alongside an exhibition entitled Design and the Elastic Mind . The Morph concept is intended to demonstrate how mobile phones of tomorrow could be stretchable and flexible, allowing the owner to transform the device into different shapes.

Nokia came up with Nokia 6110 GPS enabled handset in India . According to Nokia it is the first mobile phone that is optimized for GPS and the navigation functionalities. Presently, the phone comes with maps of 8 cities of the country, and will have important locations like hospitals, banks, restaurants, schools, colleges, petrol pumps, places of worships, etc. marked on them.

The exhibition will be on view from 24 February to 12 May 2008. The working theory of the X-SIM is that each phone operates on an identification system. The mobile phone checks if the SIM card matches the operator and if so, it opens. The X-SIM card gives a signal to the Nokia mobile phone simulating the original SIM card, so phone never really unlocks - it just allows the user to operate in any network. It can still maintain the original warranty and can also install any of the latest firmware from Nokia without problems.

The underlying technology would allow mobile devices to be stretchable and flexible, which means that phones will be able to be transformed into different shapes. A concept design developed by the Nokia Research Centre (NRC) went on display this week at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. It shows a device that can lie flat like a keyboard or be folded lengthwise to turn into a mobile phone or a bracelet.
