Recommend article: El Segundo (CA) Nokia has expanded its already comfortable lead in the cellphone market in 2007 and just barely missed to hit a 40% market share in the fourth quarter, iSuppli reports. Despite ongoing rumors of market saturation in key geographies of the world, the cellphone market is still booming. 1.15 billion devices were sold in 2007, according to iSuppli - and it is market leader Nokia that is taking advantage of most of this growing market.

Nokia Grows Faster Than Other Mobile Phone Makers

The company struggling the most was Motorola. It shipped 40.9 million mobile phones in the fourth quarter of last year, but shipments were down 37.7% compared to 65.7 million in the same period in 2006. For all of 2007, Motorola shipped 159 million mobile phones, which is a 26.8% decrease from 217.4 million shipments in 2006. iSuppli attributed the decline to slowing demand for existing mobile phones, delays in introducing new products, and several other financial factors.

Nokia To Launch A Windows Mobile Smartphone?

I think there could be some validity to this rumor. Nokia has said that it is interested in gaining market share in North America. It’s also obviously interested in getting some traction in the business mobility market. Creating a Windows Mobile version of the E62 or similar smartphone could help Nokia on both fronts.

Windows Mobile-powered version of a Nokia N-Series smartphone

In Microsoft gets their way, we could be looking at a Windows Mobile-powered version of a Nokia N-Series smartphone some time soon. The software giant already has huge contracts with companies like HTC and Motorola, but they’d love to snatch up a huge partner like Nokia, which so happens to be the world’s largest phonemaker. Microsoft has already manage to coax Samsung — which mostly sticks with Symbian — to come over to the WinMo side. This is demonstrated in the T-Mobile Shadow.

Mobile phone giant Nokia to take over Norwegian software company Trolltech

Nokia to Acquire Trolltech (MobileBurn)

Nokia says it plans to support existing and new Trolltech customers, which will be of some importance to Motorola. Motorola currently uses the Qtopia product in a number of its Linux-Java powered devices, including the MOTOROKR Z6 and E6 and the A1200 Ming smartphone. Nokia has also stated that it will continue to support Trolltech’s products both for mobile devices and personal computers and that it will continue to license the technology under both commercial and open source licenses.

Using external USB storage, Bluetooth headsets with the Nokia N810

We have a few nifty Nokia Internet Tablet tricks for you today. The first comes from Kate Alhola, Nokia s chief Maemo engineer, who wrote a blog entry explaining how to use external USB storage devices with the Nokia N810. Apparently, the N810 supports USB-OTG , which adds basic USB host support to the device, making it possible to use a limited range of USB peripherals. Alhola describes how to modify a USB cable to activate host mode so that the N810 can read data from a USB thumb drive.
