Nokia has eased fears of a mobile phone slump after rates woes in the US with the news that its fourth quarter earnings have risen above forecasts, in turn pushing up shares by more than 12 per cent. The world’s largest mobile phone-maker recorded a 57 per cent rise in shares compared with a year ago, which is 4 per cent above analyst forecasts. Sales were up 34 per cent to $22.9 billion which is almost 5 per cent above forecasts.

According to Nokia India marketing director Devinder Kishore, of the approx. 21.5 crore mobile users, many have been using their phones for a long time, and are likely to opt for new phones soon. He was speaking on the sidelines of an event that announced the appointment of Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan as the company’s latest brand ambassador.
